An Indian family have spoken of how they are laughed at on the street as nine out of 11 relatives are dwarfs. The Chauhan family, from Hyderabad, Telangana, are affected by the genetic condition Achondroplasia, which causes short limbed dwarfism.

Achondroplasia is a genetic abnormality resulting in short stature and other physical defects. This means that if you suffer from achondroplasia, you may have deformed bones resulting in physical abnormalities. Achondroplasia can result in physical defects such as short arms and legs and an abnormally large head. You may also be unable to move your elbow fully. Sometimes, this disorder is a result of genetics. But most of the cases of achondroplasia are free of any related family history and occur because of a random mutation of the genes.

Human Achondroplasia: A Multidisciplinary Approach

1. In the lumbar spinal canal of the achondroplast there is decreased cross-sectional area. In addition the intervertebral foramina are narrow. These changes result in reduced area for the dural sac and exiting spinal nerves. 2. There is associated thoracolumbar kyphosis and a lumbosacral hyperlordosis. These sagittal plane changes result in increased tension on the dural sac and nerves. 3. With aging there is disc degeneration with disc space narrowing and osteophyte formation. In addition facet hypertrophy with osteophyte formation are common.
